Artemis in Athens, with a new production and revised choreography, is a re-imagining of Artemis, originally created by Lar Lubovitch for American Ballet Theatre and commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad in honor of the 2004 Olympic games in Greece. It was performed in Athens following its premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House.

The dance is based on a ancient myth in which Zeus, father of Artemis (goddess of the hunt), has given her a secret glade on earth and decreed death to any mortal who sees her there. Aktaion, hunting deer, stumbles upon the glade. Artemis, mercifully spares his life by transforming him into a deer, and sets him free to roam the woods.

The international ballet star Alessandra Ferri will be dancing the role of Artemis, and Lubovitch company member Tobin Del Cuore will dance the role of Aktaion.

Ferri has been honored worldwide. In 1980, she won the prestigious Prix de Lausanne, and then joined the Royal Ballet and was a principal dancer of the company until 1985 when she joined American Ballet Theater at the invitation of Mikhail Baryshnikov. She remained with ABT until 2007, while also at Teatro alla Scala in Milan where she was a recognized as Prima Ballerina Assoluta. Among her numerous prestigious international awards are the Sir Lawrence Olivier Award in London, the Dance Magazine Award in NY and the Prix Benois de la Danse in Moscow. From 2008 to 2014 she was the Director of Dance Programming at the Spoleto Festival in Italy. After a six-year absence from the stage, Ferri returned to performing at the Spoleto Festival in 2013 with The Piano Upstairs, and recently in NY at the Signature Theater in a production of CHERI by Martha Clarke, marking her return to the American stage. In 2015, she will return at the Royal Ballet in a new creation by Wayne McGregor based on Virginia Woolf’s novel “Mrs. Dalloway.”

Del Cuore studied at the Juilliard School, graduating in 2001. He joined the artists of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, where he danced for six years and had the opportunity to work with some of today’s most important choreographers. Prior to joining the Lubovitch company, he also danced with Aszure Barton & Artists, Houston Grand Opera, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, and BalletX.
