On Friday May 23rd in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Lar Lubovitch will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by his alma mater, The Juilliard School. Lubovitch began his dance training at Juilliard in 1962, where his teachers were Martha Graham, Jose Limon and Antony Tudor. In 1968, Lubovitch founded the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company (LLDC), and, over the past 45 years, many graduates of Juilliard have been members of the company. The Lubovitch company has also set several of its signature works on the students at Juilliard. The most recent of these restagings was Concerto Six Twenty-Two, which was performed just last month. Click here for complete details about the upcoming ceremony.
Lubovitch will be joined by 7 other artists and philanthropists who will also be awarded honorary doctorates. They are Viola Davis, Joyce DiDonato, Frank Gehry, Philip Glass, Marcus Roberts and Bruce & Suzanne Kovner. Lubovitch has long-standing connections with several of his fellow awardees, especially with Gehry and Glass.
Every year the Chicago Dancing Festival, which was co-founded by Lubovitch and former LLDC dancer Jay Franke, takes place in venues throughout Chicago, but the one constant for the past 7 years has been a grand closing-night performance in the Gehry-designed Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. The festival has just released its line-up for the 8th season this coming August. Click here for complete details of this year’s festival.
Lubovitch has long been a great (and early) admirer of the music of Glass. Indeed, Lubovitch was one of the very first choreographers ever to create a dance set to Glass’ music. In quick succession, Lubovitch created North Star in 1978, Tilt-a-Whirl in 1979 and Mistral in 1980. Lubovitch's first dance to Glass' music, North Star, is generally considered one of the choreographer’s signature works.

Lubovitch is currently in England restaging Concerto Six Twenty-Two on Northern Ballet -- one of the UK’s best companies -- in preparation for performances from May 8-10 at London’s Royal Opera House (in the Linbury Studio Theatre) and then subsequent performances from June 18-21 at Leeds’ Burton Theatre. Concerto was created by Lubovitch in 1986, and it has been acclaimed world-wide ever since its electrifying premiere at Carnegie Hall. Click here for The New York Times review of that premiere. The central male duet is one of the most famous duets in contemporary dance. The dance is set to Mozart’s "Concerto in A for Clarinet and Orchestra." Two of the four performances at the Royal Opera House (Linbury Studio Theatre) are already sold out. Click here for complete details about the London performances. .
